Mazda MX-5 to celebrate 20th birthday

Leverkusen, 25 May 2009. This year, the world's most legendary endurance race will be venue for the 20th anniversary celebration of the world's most loved roadster: the Mazda MX-5. First shown at the Chicago Motor Show in February 1989, the original Mazda MX-5 (called Miata at the time) triggered a rebirth of the two-seat roadster. Endurance – a field of expertise for Mazda

Traction and handling
Ensuring all the FQ-400's power is put to good use is Mitsubishi's sophisticated Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel-drive system which appropriates power to the wheels that can best use it, giving the FQ-400 quite sensational cross-country performance.

The S-AWC system combines a number of electronic systems that both enhance the FQ-400's performance and safety, with Active Stability Control and Active Centre Differential, Active Yaw Control and Sport ABS giving the FQ-400 incredible cornering ability, traction and grip. Depending on the conditions the driver can select the most suitable set-up for the S-AWC system, three choices – Tarmac, Gravel and Snow – being offered via the wheel-mounted button and displayed in the central instrument binnacle.

Cornering stability
Increasing the FQ-400's cornering ability even further over its FQ relatives is a wider track and lowered suspension featuring Eibach springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers. Lightweight 18-inch, nine spoke alloy wheels fitted with Toyo Proxes R1R tyres enhance the FQ-400's grip, giving it sharper cornering response on the road and more incisive steering. The enhanced agility and performance is backed by a revised braking system which uses aerospace grade aluminium alloys and floating sealed discs grabbed by high performance pads.   

Extreme Power
To achieve the incredible 403bhp from just 2.0-litres Mitsubishi has had to significantly revise the FQ-400's advanced powerplant. Motorsport specification high-flow fuel injectors are fitted to the aluminium cylinder head and a new hybrid turbocharger is also fitted. The higher specification turbocharger features low-friction bearings, a high temperature turbine and strengthened thrust bearing to increase response and reduce turbo lag. Feeding the turbocharger cooled air, improving its performance and efficiency, is an enhanced intercooler, while the exhaust's gasses flow from the engine via a 3-inch diameter high flow stainless steel piping and catalytic convertor before exiting through a centrally positioned exhaust.

Mitsubishi has remapped the Engine Control Unit (ECU) extensively with over 500 hours of development time to allow its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to not just produce its exceptional output but to do so with excellent driveability. The FQ-400's acceleration is sensational, it pulling hard through the gears regardless of engine revs. With peak torque of 387lb.ft on offer from just 3,500rpm, the FQ-400 is just as able to trickle through town traffic as it is taking a rally special stage.

A ‘nod' to the Evo VI
The FQ-400 looks every bit the rally refugee too, giving a strong ‘nod' to the styling cues of the legendary Evolution VI, and builds on the already aggressive style of its Lancer Evolution X FQ relatives.

A heavily vented bonnet helps heat escape from the FQ-400's turbocharged engine and a new lightweight composite front bumper incorporating Mitsubishi's trademark ‘Jet Fighter' grille features carbon-fibre elements on its leading edges. Additional lighting and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights mark out the FQ-400's nose, its added aggressiveness further enhanced by a 30mm drop in front ride height. Composite side skirts, a re-styled rear bumper with a carbon fibre diffuser, a rear wing incorporating a gurney strip and a roof-mounted ‘Vortex Generator' all help manage airflow and cooling.

Behind the 18-inch lightweight, nine spoke alloy wheels it's possible to see the Alcon brakes on the front, while the Toyo Proxes R1R tyres underline the FQ-400's potency with their aggressive ‘cut slick' tread pattern. Inside, the driver is held tightly against the FQ-400's sensational accelerative, braking and cornering forces in Recaro bucket sports seats, the range-topping Lancer Evolution X also gaining an FQ-400 liveried handbrake handle and carbon fibre gearknob.

No compromise
Despite its obvious focus the FQ-400's suspension offers compliance thanks to the Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers, the FQ-400's usefulness as a daily driver not compromised overly thanks to Mitsubishi's chassis tuning. The stiff bodywork not only provides an exceptionally rigid platform for the suspension to work, but excellent crash-worthiness, the Lancer Evolution X attaining a five-star score in Euro NCAP's independent crash tests. The FQ-400's S-AWC and its incorporated stability, traction and braking systems helping avoid an accident in the first place. Even so there's reassurance of seven airbags, seat belt pretensioners and ISO Fix child seating all included in its standard specification.

Fully loaded
Standard equipment for the range-topping Lancer Evolution X model is comprehensive, the FQ-400 coming with Bluetooth hands-free telephone connection, a CD-tuner with 30 Gig hard drive, DVD satellite navigation and privacy glass. Convenience features like remote central locking, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers increase the FQ-400's ease of use, the huge performance it offers not coming at the expense of usefulness. Like its Lancer Evolution X relatives it features comfortable seating for five as well as a usefully sized boot, the FQ-400 bringing all the convenience of the standard saloon car it's based upon – but with explosive performance potential.   


Setting the standard
Standard it's not though, instead the FQ-400 is a standard setter, with performance that's the measure of any rival and many exotic sports and supercars costing many multiples of its £49,999 list price. Available from June 2009, the FQ-400 is covered by a three year / 36,000 mile warranty.

A millionaire car enthusiast is attempting to revive the 2010 British Motor Show as a smaller scale event.

Darren Richards is hoping to create a syndicate of wealthy car enthusiasts to finance the show, saying it is important for the industry for it to go ahead in some form.


In March it was announced the 2010 event has been cancelled due to the global economic crisis. It is thought 2013 would be the earliest it could be resurrected.

But Richards says he has already been in contact with a number of high-profile car enthusiasts including Rowan Atkinson, Jeremy Clarkson and Simon Cowell to gain support for his campaign.

He now wants the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) to reinstate the show and has approached them with a view to running it.

Richards said: “We need to weather through this storm. It’s more reason to preserve the tradition of the motor show. We must not just roll over. Even if the event is scaled down dramatically next year it must still happen.“

The SMMT said it hadn't been contacted by Richards, adding: "We would be interested in any proposal but at the moment the manufacturers are not in a financial position for the show to go ahead."

BMW S 1000 RR Unleashed



BMW has finally pulled the wraps off its new S 1000 RR superbike, and let's just say we're anything but disappointed. First, the most important bits: 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPM, 82.5 lb-ft of torque at 9,750 RPM, 455.3 pounds with a full tank of gas. For those keeping track – which is probably just about anyone interested enough to read this post – those statistics are enough to give the big Beemer the most horsepower and best power-to-weight ratio of all literbikes intended for public consumption.



The engine has a very compact cylinder head and is narrow in shape.  The valves are activated by means of very small, light cam followers, virtually at Formula 1 level in terms of their dimensions.

This construction ensures very high engine speeds and allows maximum freedom in engine design in terms of torque and output.

The production BMW S 1000 RR will be presented to the public in the early summer of 2009, but it is currently available for pre-order at your BMW dealer.

The 2009 price of the S1000RR in Germany is 15,150 euros incl. VAT.  U.S. market availability and pricing of the production S 1000 RR has not been determined and will be provided at a later date.

Style-Your-Garage

A garage offers room for anything. Make space for your wildest dreams!

How it works: Your garage billboard comes complete with a separate, self-adhesive Velcro fastener and can be attached immediately!
The billboard is fitted in the same sort of way as a fly screen at the window.

It doesn’t matter what material (metal, wood, plastic, etc.) the up-and-over garage door is made from. The standard size of the garage billboard is: Height 2.10 m x width 2.45 m.

To install your garage billboard, you will need:

Around 15 – 30 minutes
Possibly someone to help you
A measuring tape or ruler
A felt pen
Scissors / cutters / Stanley knife
Cleaning agent, e.g. spirits
Dry cleaning cloth

Cutting to size – step 1:

The upper edge with the pre-fitted Velcro strip is your guide line.
This must remain as it is – do not cut anything off it. After you have measured your up-and-over garage door correctly with a measuring tape or ruler (important! only measure the moving, tilting part of the door, NOT the frame!), spread the garage billboard out in front of you on a clean floor. The side with the picture should face down, with the light reverse (the side without the motif) facing upwards. At the top you will now see the guide line (with the visible Velcro strip, from which you should now use a felt pen to carefully draw the outline of your garage door.
Note: If your door is for instance only 2 metres tall and 2.15 metres wide, you will have a height excess of 10 cm and width excess of 30 cm.
What should you do?
You only take off the bottom 10 cm (the top is your guide line that must not be altered!) and 15 cm on the right and left (2 x 15 cm = 30 cm). This maintains the symmetry of the motif.
Now take a pair of scissors or a cutter / segmented blade and cut the garage billboard precisely to the size of your up-and-over garage door.

Cutting to size – step 2:

Now you use the roll of Velcro fastening supplied. It comes as a rough, textured piece that you secure to your garage door (Important! only stick to the moving, tilting part!) and a soft, fleecy piece that you stick to the reverse of the garage billboard. Now cut enough of both parts from the roll of Velcro so that you have sufficient for the height and width of your garage doors and garage billboard. So, as described in step 1, for instance 2 m x 2.15 m.
On the guide edge of the billboard, i.e. the top, we have already stuck the fleecy part of the Velcro on for you.
Once you have cut the Velcro tape, you should now have three strips of tape with a fleecy surface and four with a rough surface.

Securing – step 1:

Clean the side edges of your garage door to the width of the Velcro strip using a cleaning agent, e.g. spirits. Before you do this, always carry out a test in an inconspicuous place to avoid damage to paint or discolouration. After drying the cleaning agent, secure the rough strips to your garage door – at the top, left, right and bottom. As you do so, you must absolutely ensure that the Velcro tape is affixed secure and smooth on your garage door. Smooth it over evenly as you go along.
Now do the same with the fleecy strips of tape on your garage billboard, on the left, right and bottom. To ensure everything remains straight and even, we recommend that you use a measuring tape and possibly also a spirit level.
Wait for around 30 minutes until the Velcro parts are fully glued onto the garage door and on the reverse of the garage billboard.

Securing – step 2:

Now you can start attaching the garage billboard onto your up-and-over garage door:
It’s best done by two people, but of course you can do it on your own!
Start with the guide line: slowly press the Velcro strips together from the centre outwards to the left and right. Then press the garage billboard into place along the left side from the top to the middle. Then on the right hand side from the top to the middle. Then once again on the left hand side from the middle to the bottom and then the right hand side from the middle to the bottom. Finally, fix the garage billboard in position along its bottom edge.

Securing – step 3:

You still need to be able to access your garage door handle to open and close the garage door. To do this, feel or measure in advance where the handle / lock is positioned, marking the area very lightly with the felt pen. Take a cutter / Stanley knife and cut the garage billboard in a slightly cross-shaped fashion – just enough for you to be able to feed the handle through without tearing the billboard. We recommend cutting out a small section at the marking around the lock so that there are no problems when opening and closing the door.

Everything done? Brilliant – well that’s all there is to it!
